Imagine for a moment it’s Sept. 18, 1895. You’re in the office of D.D. Palmer, a ‘magnetic healer’ and it’s after work hours. The janitor, Harvey Lillard approaches Dr. Palmer and starts telling him a story.
“Doc, I was just doing my normal day’s work. I bent over to grab a trashcan and felt a pop in my neck. Ever since that, I’ve been deaf. Do you think you can check it out?”
Dr. Palmer examined the area and found a bump in his neck that was situated over the spine. To the doctor, it seemed obvious that the bump was a spinal vertebrae out of alignment. He knew this from his knowledge of anatomy.
“Well, it looks like your vertebrae is out of place, Harvey,” Doc Palmer said. “I can move the joint around and we can see if that bump will go away if you’d like…”
“Sure doc! Let’s try!” Harvey said.
Dr. Palmer gave the first adjustment at that moment in time. Little did he know that he was about to change history.
“How was that?” the doctor asked.
“I can hear you! I heard you say ‘how was that’! I heard you loud and clear like I used to long ago before my accident,” Harvey exclaimed.
Harvey got his hearing back! And he made sure he told everyone he met. When someone is in pain or loses one of their senses and the situation changes for the better, that person is so happy that they can barely contain themselves. It’s a miracle to them. Word of mouth traveled fast in Davenport and soon people from all over the U.S. came to Dr. Palmer’s office. The chiropractic profession was born. Two years later, Dr. Palmer put all his valuable adjusting experience into a curriculum that taught others how to be chiropractic physicians. And now there are dozens of chiropractic schools worldwide.
How That First Adjustment Changed History
That first adjustment wasn’t even for back or neck pain, two conditions that chiropractic excels in relieving. Because the nervous system sends out nerves through the spine for every part of the body –†every muscle, bone, artery, organ and skin cell, adjusting the spine can remove the interference that is causing pain or disease.
Chiropractors use various diagnostic methods, including x-rays to discover the state of your health. They pay attention to your spine and bone structure, knowing that a simple blockage or ‘bump’ in the spine like what Harvey had can end up causing you pain, suffering and disease. Chiropractors use manipulation of the joints in the spine or other parts of the body to help the body heal itself. The art is strongly grounded in the sciences of anatomy, neuroanatomy, physiology, cell biology, and endocrinology. Chiropractors are experts at understanding the human body and that’s why they can pinpoint a problem and create a solution sometimes in less than a minute!
Chiropractic is a drug-free, surgery-free approach to optimal health. It’s conservative, yet it’s the largest natural health care profession in the world.
